Modularity, segregation, and interactions

چکیده
This commentary considers how far one can go in making inferences about functional modularity or segregation, based on the sorts of analyses used by Caplan & Waters in relation to the underlying neuronal infrastructure. Specifically, an attempt is made to relate the “functionalist” approach adopted in the target article to “neuroreductionist” perspectives

Mining Overlapping Communities in Real-world Networks Based on Extended Modularity Gain
Detecting communities plays a vital role in studying group level patterns of a social network and it can be helpful in developing several recommendation systems such as movie recommendation, book recommendation, friend recommendation and so on. Most of the community detection algorithms can detect disjoint communities only, but in the real time scenario, a node can be a member of more than one ...
متن کاملModules and brain mapping
This review highlights the key role of modularity and the additive factors method in functional neuroimaging. Our focus is on structure-function mappings in the human brain and how these are disclosed by brain mapping. We describe how modularity of processing (and possibly processes) was a key point of reference for establishing functional segregation as a principle of brain organization. Furth...
متن کاملCommunity structure and modularity in networks of correlated brain activity.
Functional connectivity patterns derived from neuroimaging data may be represented as graphs or networks, with individual image voxels or anatomically-defined structures representing the nodes, and a measure of correlation between the responses in each pair of nodes determining the edges. This explicit network representation allows network-analysis approaches to be applied to the characterizati...
متن کاملMaximum Maintainability of Complex Systems via Modulation Based on DSM and Module Layout.Case Study:Laser Range Finder
The present paper aims to investigate the effects of modularity and the layout of subsystems and parts of a complex system on its maintainability. For this purpose, four objective functions have been considered simultaneously: I) maximizing the level of accordance between system design and optimum modularity design,II) maximizing the level of accessibility and the maintenance space required,III...
متن کاملBreakdown of Modularity in Complex Networks
The presence of modular organization is a common property of a wide range of complex systems, from cellular or brain networks to technological graphs. Modularity allows some degree of segregation between different parts of the network and has been suggested to be a prerequisite for the evolvability of biological systems. In technology, modularity defines a clear division of tasks and it is an e...
